To get started, we suggest an Olympus digital voice recorder model # DS-2300. This can be purchased online for around $180. If you can’t locate a unit we will provide one for you. The DS-2300 has all you need to start dictating. The unit will hold 2 ½ hours of dictation when using the high quality record mode. There are no tapes or memory cards to change. Connecting the DS-2300 to a USB port on your computer will retrieves the files. There is a synopsis made available of the instructions that are included with the recorder.

There are other digital recorders out on the market that can create .wav or .dss files, but we have found this to be good unit for the quality and price.

Optional:

If you sit in front of your computer while dictating you can record directly into the computer. This usually only requires a microphone that can be purchased at Radio Shack or CompUSA, and sound recording software (typically included on most machines that have sound cards installed).

You will need Internet access, typically a high-speed connection is better, but dialup will work.

To transfer the voice files and finished work, we use e-mail or FTP servers that are located at the Transcription House. Connecting to our FTP server can be done through FTP software. There are other options of receiving your finished work back to you, depending on what you prefer.

We provide all technical support free of charge and will be happy to assist you in any way.
